Baviaanskloof Accommodation
Zandvlakte is an operational farm offering
accommodation,
either dinner bed and breakfast, or selfcatering, in old
restored
buildings
on the farm, dating from 1811 to the late 1900's.
The historical shopownershouse:

The building is a typical example of the Karoo
Georgian style,
with the Victorian features added some 80 years later.
The original shop counter was installed in the house as
well as the benches which were used by the customers
waiting for the arrival of the mailbag either by oxwagon
and later by bus.
Features such as the origninal yellow wood frames around
the mirrors also represent the history this house has to offer.

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with showers, baths and toilets.

Fully equipped selfcatering kitchen with fridge/freezer,
4-plate electric stove with oven, microwave,
cutlery and other cooking utensils.

Bath house:
The Bathhouse was an outside utility, built prior to 1900 as a
solarium
for the men on the farm. It originally contained a bath which was
big enough to seat 10 men, with circulating hot water as well as
an adjacent
dressingroom. It was expected of the men to be dressed
in suits for dinner
in the evenings. In 2008 it was turned into
accommodation facilities for two
people staying dinner bed and breakfast.
It contains one bedroom, ensuite
bathroom and spacious living area.
The original solarium roof with the
original outside walls
were preserved
and restored.


Zandvlakte Thatch-roof cottage
This is the first residential
building on the farm, buit in 1817 as a
'Hartbeeshuisie' with its dungflooring and animal skins to seperate
the rooms. The thatch was attached to the yellow wood frame work
of the roof
with leather thongs ('riempies'). The yellow wood beams
and rafters
itself were handmade and connected with stinkwood pegs
('penne'). The
orgininal frame work of the roof, as well as the mud and
stone walls have been
preserved.

6 people: 1 private bedroom.
4 single beds in the open living area - two of these beds are located in the
small attic.

facility,
with all the cooking utensils necessary for selfcatering.
Bosvlakte


The buildings, originally part of Zandvlakte farm, served as a
school, a hostel as well as the living quarters of the 'hostel parents',
which also worked on Zandvlakte as foremen. Adv. J.G. Strijdom,
son of
former owners of Zandvlakte attended this school but did
not reside in the
boarding facilities or the house at Bosvlakte.
The current owners, Robert
and Trish van Zyl restored the
buildings which dates from the previous
century, and added
many Africana pieces to the interior decorating.
Bosvlakte accommodates 6 people.
three bedrooms;
two bathrooms;
living room area;
Fully equipped kitchen with fridge/freezer, 4-plate stove
as well everything else needed for selfcatering.
Under roof braai facility.
Rooikloof
A foreman's house which formed part of Zandvlakte farm,
was built
around 1900. It was restored by the current owner,
Stefan Roux, in the early
1990's.

Hessehuis -
An original workers house that has been restored by the current owner,
Stefan Roux, in its original style with one living area containing the
dinningroom table as well as 2 single beds,
with the kitchen and bathroom
outside.
1 bathroom with shower and toilet;
Kitchen with 4-plate gas stove, small gas fridge;
Fully equipped for selfcatering.
No electricity: gas and candles.



Distances between houses:
Winkeliershuis, Badshuis and Zandvlakte thatchroof cottage are within walking
distance of each other. It forms part of the original outbuildings of the
historical
homestead.

Zandvlakte to Bosvlakte: 2 km.
Zandvlakte to Rooikloof en Hessehuis: 4 km.
Bosvlakte to Rooikloof/ Hessehuis: 2 km
Hessehuis to Rooikloof: 50 meter - walking distance.
Zandvlakte is situated in the center of the Baviaanskloof.
There are no internet or telephone facilities in the guest cottages
available.
The lifestyle is informal, relaxed, barefoot, quiet.
There's a swimmingpool at the homestead.
Guests enjoy the rural late nights around a fire, walking, bird watching,
reading and sleeping in the wild.
Zandvlakte is known for serenity at its wildest!
It is not a lodge, guesthouse, public hotel or public resort - take note!
It is a private family farm
offering hospitality to people by the owners
and all the pets. Prepare
yourself for the rustic informal wildness of
the surroundings.

Dinner bed and breakfast is available by prior booking only.
Reservations are only accepted by telephone due to the irregularity
of the internet connection. Please bear this in mind if you want prompt
reaction.
Be wise and book in advance!
Right of admission is strictly reserved by the owners and only a very
limited
number of people are allowed onto the property per day to ensure a
private
experience in the vast open spaces offered on the property.
